Moom
This animated adaption of the Japanese children’s book of the same name comes from the academy-award nominated team behind the short film The Dam Keeper – Robert Kondo and Daisuke ’Dice’ Tsutsumi. The film has won no less than seven Best Animation awards from film festivals all over the world and rightly so.It is about our ability to attach memories to objects and the loss that we may feel as we let go of these moments.Moom is a character living in a surreal world of discarded objects, toys, ballet shoes and so on, most of which come with memories attached. Some of the memory figures can’t bear to be parted from the objects they once belonged to …These creatures are beautifully brought to life through 3D animation and tasked with helping other memories to let go of their objects. When a pretty pink memory arrives attached to a pair of ballet flats, Moom stops at nothing to make her happy, showing off the beauty in his world.Moom is the kind of short film that will make you fall in love and think about yourself in a completely different light. The beauty that can come from this sense of impermanence and the fact that moving on from what we once knew and building on it is the only way to experience growth in our lives. It exists in this amazing colourful overgrown world accompanied by a life orchestral soundtrack that provides a moving accompaniment to the visuals. Most of the narrative is conveyed without any dialogue and is brought to life by very simple characters that convey more emotion and heart than you would ever expect.
